A un-interview with the Queen

As far as career tangents go, NivedithaPrakasam has had an interesting ride. From having a degree in Automobile Engineering to working as a language editor to winning the Queens of Comedy show on TLC last year, this young comedian has now garnered the attention of a nation for her witty one-liners and her sarcastic look at the world.

The talent hunt for women comedians, which had eight women from across the country vying for the title in the first season, was judged by actor RichaChadha, All India Bakchod’s Rohan Joshi and comedian KaneezSurka; and it was somewhat serendipitous for Niveditha when she decided to enter the contest — “I saw a tweet on the show two days before the deadline closed and sent in the video on the last day. Luckily, they loved my video.”

When we decided to catch up with Niveditha, we figured a regular interview just wouldn’t cut it with this Chennaivaasi. We wanted a taste of her blunt yet unique sense of humour. So, we put her through a rapid fire ‘un-interview’. Let’s just say this is the kind of stuff that would make Proust proud! (not?)

For the uninitiated? Can you please introduce NivedithaPrakasam?

I'm a shy introvert that dislikes getting out of the house and would rather stay home and play video games but works because one has to get by in life.

Queen of Comedy. What does that mean?

It's a title they give to the winner of the reality show called Queens of Comedy.

So what does the Queen of Comedy get to do?

Oh, just queen around! *Laughs* Just kidding. Hopefully, make the right decisions in life like the rest of you. I mean us royals aren't any different from you ordinary folk.

What do you plan to do now that you have won this? More stand up? Web series? Movies?PTA meetings?

Whatever pays more. Do PTA meetings pay? Because I would be great at PTAs.

When did you realize you are funny enough to get on stage and hold a crowd?

I’ve always thought I was funny in conversation, but the first time I ever did standup on a big stage was on the show. So, yeah – I knew I could pursue stand-up seriously on Queens of Comedy … and I found out I could act! What?!

Do people really think women aren't funny? Why do you think that stereotype came about?

Some men think women aren't funny. It's not a stereotype, it's click-bait.

On a scale of one to Madagascar, how funny would you rate yourself?

YouTube comments section.

Which comedian would do you call your spirit guide?

I have a comedy influence for every year of my life… and I’m pretty old. So...

How would you describe Chennai's sense of humour?

Unlike mine. (My jokes don't do as well here as they do in Mumbai.)

Given Tamil Nadu's current political scenario, any plans to run for CM?

The people’s verdict is God’s verdict.

If you ever got to give yourself a stage name, what would you call yourself?

I would already be calling myself by that name if I were that creative. But I do have social media accounts with the handle @nivaysays  YouTube comments section.
