NEW DELHI: NDA candidate Om Birla unanimously elected as the speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Om Birla's name was proposed by PM Narendra Modi in Lok Sabha and was supported by all major parties including Congress, TMC, DMK, BJD, YSRCP and TDP.

Prime Minister Modi addressed the House and heaped praises on Om Birla.

Addressing 17th Lok Sabha, PM Modi said:

“It is a matter of great pride for the House and we all congratulate Om Birla on being unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Many MPs know Birla well. He has served in the state of Rajasthan as well”.

Birla, who won his first Lok Sabha election in 2014, was again elected this year from Rajasthan's Kota-Bundi seat.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, he defeated Congress's Ramnarayan Meena with a huge margin of over 2.5 lakh votes.

Om Birla is a member of the Standing Committee on Energy in Parliament, member of Committee on Petitions and Consultative Committee for Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
