RAE BARELI: United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday filed her nomination papers from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
72-year-old Sonia Gandhi is seeking re-election from the seat for the fifth time in a row. She had won the seat in 2004, 2006 (by-polls), 2009 and 2014.
She was accompanied by her son and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her son-in-law Robert Vadra.
UPA chairperson reached the Collectorate to file her papers after a roadshow through the town.
Thousands of party workers including women and youth gathered waving party flags and raising slogans as they started their roadshow. They also gathered at the Collectorate to greet the UPA chairperson.
She also offered puja at the Congress central office here. Congress general secretary in-charge for Uttar Pradesh (East) Priyanka Gandhi, her children Raihan and Miray, and several party leaders also took part in the pooja.
Voting will be held in Rae Bareli in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls on May 6.
Here we can see a straight contest between Sonia Gandhi and BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh. He recently joined the BJP after leaving the Congress.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have not fielded a candidate in the Congress bastion.
On Wednesday, Congress President Rahul Gandhi had filed his nomination from Amethi for 2019 LS polls in the presence of Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Robert Vadra.
He had also held a roadshow and rode on the rooftop of a truck, flanked by sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, her husband Robert Vadra and her children Raihan and Miraya.
For the second consecutive time, Rahul Gandhi will contest against Union textile minister and BJP candidate Smriti Irani from Amethi. She was lost to Rahul Gandhi in 2014.
Rahul Gandhi is also contesting from Wayanad in Kerala and filed his nomination papers from there on April 4.
He had submitted the nomination papers before the district Collector A R Ajayakumar at the district headquarters in Kalpetta in Kerala
On that day, Gandhi was accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi and senior Congress leaders including K C Venugopal and Mukul Wasnik.
Amethi goes to the polls on May 6 in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, which begin on Thursday and Wayanad will vote on April 23
The counting of votes will be held on May 23.
