NEW DELHI: Top political leaders paid tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 75 birth anniversary on Tuesday.
Senior Congress leaders, including interim party president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manmohan Singh paid floral tributes to the visionary leader at his memorial Veer Bhumi here.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee, former Vice President Hamid Ansari, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Ahmed Patel too paid tributes to the late leader.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid their tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary.
Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote:
"Tributes to our former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary."
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also offered his tribute to the late Prime Minister.
"I offer my tributes to former Prime Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his 75th birth anniversary today", Rajnath Singh tweeted
Rajiv Ratna Gandhi was an Indian politician who served as the 6th Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989. He took office after the assassination of his mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 and became the youngest Indian Prime Minister at the age of 40
The assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi occurred as a result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, in Tamil Nadu on 21 May 1991 and at least 14 others were also killed in the massive blasting.
