Alok Verma’s removal as CBI chief ‘illegal’: Rahul

NEW DELHI: Congress supremo Rahul Gandi on Thursday said that the decision to send the CBI Director on an indefinite leave forcibly was “illegal” and accused the government of panicking over the probability of Alok Verma investigating the Rafale jet deal.

Speaking to the media here, he said that Verma’s removal from the CBI was an “insult” to the Constitution, the chief justice of India and the leader of the opposition.  He termed the move taken by the government as “illegal”.

Nageswara Rao has been appointed as the interim chief so that the prime minister can control him, the Congress chief stated.

At a press conference, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana were asked to go on leave as directed by the Central Vigilance Commission and that it was “absolutely essential” to maintain the institutional integrity of the CBI.
