BENGALURU: A massive fire broke out at a bar and restaurant today morning at the Kalasipalya market area. Five workers were killed who were sleeping inside, police said."The victims were charred to death in the fire at Kailash Bar & Restaurant in the K.R. Market area between 2.30-3 a.m., while they were asleep on the ground floor of the building," Bengaluru Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) M.N. Anucheth said.

BENGALURU : While protesting against the brutal murder of Bajrang Dal and BJP activist Deepak Rao in Mangalore, in Dakshina Kannada, BJP accused state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of nurturing ‘politics of murder’ in Karnataka. Rao was 28 years old and was a worker for Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Leaders of BJP, the chief opposition party in Karnataka, demanded that the CM must resign at the earliest.

BENGALURU : Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Thursday rejected the opposition BJP's demand for a National Investigation Agency inquiry into the murder of a "Hindu activist". "There is no need to entrust the inquiry to the NIA, as police have already arrested four suspects allegedly involved in the murder of Deepak Rao and are investigating the case from all angles," he told reporters.

Asking for ‘randomly selected’ EVMs, the state govt. stated that the machines were needed for a public hackathon that would be conducted to banish the doubts that have arisen about the possibility of the machines being hacked.

DHARWAD (KARNATAKA): Normal life was disrupted on Wednesday in four districts in northern Karnataka due to a day-long shutdown, called for the release of Mahadayi river water by Goa to the drought-prone region in the southern state. “Barring stray incidents of burning tyres on roads, blocking movement of trucks and forcible closure of shops and eateries by the agitators, the dawn-to-dusk (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) shutdown was peaceful,” a senior police official told IANS here.

BENGALURU : State-run Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) on Monday reported Rs 412 crore net profit for the second quarter of 2017-18, registering 19 per cent annual growth from Rs 346 crore in the same period year ago. "Sales turnover for the quarter under review at Rs 2,432 crore is up 46 per cent annually from Rs 1,664 crore in the like period year ago," said the defence firm in a statement here.

BENGALURU : Indira canteens to serve food at affordable price will be opened across Karnataka from January 1 at an estimated cost of Rs 185 crore, said a state minister on Wednesday. "In all, 246 Indira canteens will be opened in all the 30 districts and sub-districts (taluks) across the state from January 1 to serve food three times daily at affordable price for the poor," Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. BENGALURU : Blessed with bountiful monsoon rains this year, Karnataka is set to reap higher foodgrain production and recover from last year's lower output following severe drought across the state. "We expect a nearly 38 per cent jump in foodgrain production to 135 lakh tonnes this year (2017-18) from 98 lakh tonnes production last year (2016-17), thanks to very good monsoon rains in the past four months," an official told IANS here.
