KOTTAYAM : A vigilance court in Kerala on Thursday directed that a case be registered against former state Transport Minister Thomas Chandy in a land grabbing case. Fresh trouble surfaced for Chandy as the Kottayam Vigilance Court directed the Vigilance Department to register the case in the usurping of government land near the former Minister's plush resort in Alappuzha.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Battling land grab charges, Kerala Transport Minister Thomas Chandy on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who forwarded it to the Governor. Speaking to the media at the Secretariat later, NCP leader T.P. Peethamabaran said the resignation letter had been handed over to Vijayan. "All the details will be told to you at 2 p.m."

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said that there was "no need to speculate" on Transport Minister Thomas Chandy's resignation, adding the NCP has sought time to discuss the same with its national leadership. This came after the Kerala High Court on Tuesday dismissed Chandy's petition against the District Collector's report in Lake Palace Resort row and said that the minister should step down before approaching the court.

THRISSUR (KERALA) : An RSS activist was killed here on Sunday by CPI-M workers, the state Bharatiya Janata Party office has claimed. The incident occurred at around 1.30 p.m. when Anand, who was on a two-wheeler, was knocked down by a car. He was then hacked to death.

KOCHI : Superstar Dileep, who is out on bail in a kidnapping case, has written to the state Home Secretary seeking a CBI probe into the case. The 12-page letter, sent on Friday to the Secretary, said that he was given a raw deal by the police team headed by Additional Director General of Police B. Sandhya. The actor's request came at a time when the police is set to file the final charge sheet in the kidnapping of an actress.

KOCHI : The Kerala High Court on Tuesday rejected an anticipatory bail plea by top advocate C.P. Udayabhanu over his alleged role in the murder of a real estate broker in September. The police has arraigned him as an accused in the case. A single bench of the High Court while rejecting his plea, observed that none was "above the law". It also rejected his counsel's argument that Udayabhanu "will submit himself" before the probe team.

KOLLAM : A woman died and over 30 persons were injured when an old iron bridge across a water-body and connecting two units of the state-owned Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd (KMML) collapsed on Monday, police said. The incident occurred around 10.45 a.m. when mostly KMML workers were using the bridge. The deceased was identified as Shyamala Devi.

KOZHIKODE (KERALA) : Hugely popular writer and novelist Punathil Kunjabdulla, passed away here on Friday, said a family member. He was 77. A medical doctor by profession, Kunjabdulla is best known for his works -- "Smarakasilakal Marunnu", "Kanyavanangal", "Kathi", "Aligarh Kathakal" and "Malamukalile Abdulla" among many others.  Popularly called "Kunjikka", Kunjabdulla was ailing for a year. He breathed his last at 7.45 a.m. at a private hospital here.

KANNUR (KERALA) : Three persons suspected of having links with the terror group Islamic State (IS) were arrested in Kannur in Kerala on Wednesday, police said. According to a police officer, the suspects allegedly had links with the IS as they were in Turkey recently. A police officer on the condition of anonymity told IANS the three men are now in police custody. "They are being questioned and I do not know about other details," the officer said.

According to GST Council tax rates, non-AC restaurants charge 12 per cent GST on food while AC restaurants and those with liquor licence charge 18 per cent. Five-star hotels charge a GST of 28 per cent.

KOCHI : In what could be a shocking blow to former Indian pacer S. Sreesanth, a division bench of the Kerala high court on Tuesday upheld the appeal made by the BCCI against the earlier single bench verdict that lifted the life ban on the bowler in August this year. The division bench of Chief Justice Navniti Prasad Singh ruled that the court cannot conduct a judicial review on the life ban imposed by the BCCI and hence upheld the appeal.

KOCHI : The CBI on Tuesday told the Kerala High Court it is ready to probe all the political murders that took place in Kannur in the past one year, officials said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) counsel told this to the court, when a petition by a Kannur-based trust came up, demanding CBI probe into the seven political murders that took place in Kannur district, in which the CPI-M workers are alleged to have murdered BJP/RSS workers.
