For the third consecutive day on Saturday, Income Tax (IT) officials continued their raids at several premises. "Sizeable volume of cash and documents have been seized at the searched premises. The search operation is still on.

Sasikala, their business associates and organisations connected to them, a senior IT official said. He also said that "sizeable volume of cash and documents" have been seized at the searched premises.

CHENNAI : Income Tax (IT) officials on Thursday raided 187 locations belonging to relatives of jailed AIADMK leader V.K. Sasikala, her nephew T.T.V. Dinakaran and organisations connected to them in several cities, said a senior IT official. He said the search is in connection with unexplained routing of cash post-demonetisation through shell companies connected with them.

CHENNAI : Owing to continuous rains schools and colleges in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Pudukottai and Nagapattiman districts of Tamil Nadu were closed on Friday. The weather department has predicted more rains for the coastal districts of the state. The educational institutions were ordered by the respective district administrations to remain closed on the day owing to heavy water logging that followed the rains.

CHENNAI : Two girls died on Wednesday due to electrocution in Kodungaiyur in Chennai as heavy rains pounded the city and suburban areas as well as coastal districts of Tamil Nadu for a third day. Bhavna and Vijayshri, both eight years old, were electrocuted when they stepped on a power cable covered by stagnant rain water in R.R. Nagar.

CHENNAI : Schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts were closed for second consecutive day on Wednesday owing to rains, the district administrations said. Schools in these districts were closed on Tuesday owing to rains on Monday. However, on Tuesday there were no rains during the day. Nevertheless the district administrations declared holidays due to water logging in the schools.

CHENNAI : The Madras High Court on Wednesday said that the state police can register a case against actor Kamal Haasan if there is a prima facie case against him for his comments on a herbal drink the Tamil Nadu government is advocating to counter dengue and chikungunya. Hearing a petition filed by Devarajan to order registration of case against the actor, the court said police can register a case against Haasan if there is merit in the complaint against him.

CHENNAI : Apologizing for supporting demonetisation, actor Kamal Hassan said he will again salute Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he also accepts that the note ban was a mistake. In an article in the Tamil magazine Anandavikatan, the actor said accepting and correcting mistakes is a marker for great leaders which Mahatma Gandhi was able to do. Palaniswami on Monday said the state was generating around 800-1,200 MW solar power as against its installed capacity of 1,786.48 MW. Speaking at a function at Raj Bhavan here, Palaniswami said Tamil Nadu ranks at the top in the nation in renewable energy space. He said 78.44 MW of the installed generation capacity of 1,786.48 MW was roof-top solar power.

CHENNAI : The Tamil Nadu government has decided to reduce the local entertainment tax by two per cent to eight per cent after talks with the movie industry, a Tamil Film Producers Council official said on Friday. Sasikala returned to Bengaluru Central Jail on Thursday after the five-day parole granted to meet her ailing husband in a Chennai hospital, jail officials said. "Sasikala has returned to the prison on Thursday at around 4.30 p.m. within the stipulated time," Bengaluru Central Jail Superintendent G. Somashekar told IANS here. "There have been noAviolations by her during the parole period," he said.

CHENNAI : Tamil Nadu Minister for Electricity P. Thangamani has urged the central government to increase coal supplies as originally promised to avoid blackouts since the current supplies are inadequate. Thangamani also said the state-owned Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) had been advised to approach central public sector organisations to import coal to avoid blackouts.

She has been directed to keep away from all political activity during the parole period. Sasikala, 60, left for Chennai in a private car along with her nephew and sidelined AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dinakaran from the jail at Parapanna Agrahara on the city's southern outskirts.

CHENNAI : The Madras High Court on Wednesday continued its stay on a floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and holding bye elections in the 18 seats declared vacant by the Speaker after he disqualified 18 MLAs belonging to the rebel group headed by T.T.V. Dinakaran. Justice Ravichandrababu ordered the continuance of the "consent order" earlier passed and adjourned the case for further hearing the petition against disqualification to October 9.

Dhanapal in connection with a case filed by the DMK seeking to disqualify 12 former rebel AIADMK MLAs for voting against the government in February.
