DISPUR: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has confirmed that Indian Athlete Hima Das will be named as the first sports ambassador of the state.The announcement came after Hima Das recently became the first Indian woman to win gold at IAAF World U-20 Athletics Championships.
A pre-tournament favourite, Das clocked 51.46s to finish ahead of Andrea Miklos of Romania and USA's Taylor Manson.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced a cash reward will be given to Hima Das for bringing laurels to the state by winning India’s first ever track gold at a global event.
The 18-year-old made the country proud as she scripted history by clinching the top spot in the women's 400 m final race at the Championships which was held in France.
Sonowal in a statement said that the Assamese youngster has achieved a rare feat by becoming the first Indian athlete to win gold in such a prestigious track event.
In order to inspire the budding players of the state to aim big and the young generation to take up sports seriously, Hima will also be made the state’s brand ambassador for sports, Sonowal announced.
