After a well fought test and ODI series, India completed their tour of South Africa with a convincing victory in the last T20. The game was crucial after both teams had won a match each in the series. It was also metaphorically the tour decider as South Africa had won the test series and India had won the one-day series.
India had the upper hand as they had thrashed the hosts 5-1 in the 50 over format whereas the test sides were more evenly matched and yielded a result of 2-1 in favour of the Proteas.
The hosts struggled against the spin duo of Chahal and Kuldeep, whereas India had trouble with the South African pacers in the first two tests. Indian pacers including Jaspreet Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar performed well throughout the tour raising the fans’ expectations about India’s tour of England and Australia later in the year. The player of the tour was easily Virat Kohli who succeeded like no other Indian captain had succeeded in South African. His effort with the bat in the third test helped India to make their first statement in the series with a convincing victory at Johannesburg. India never looked back after the victory and managed to win the first three one-day internationals.
Apart from Kohli, Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan also managed to find form in the tour and justified the chances they were given. While the batsmen including former captain M.S. Dhoni did not let the team down, the bowlers often exceeded expectations and made the opposition look very weak. Injury to key South African layers like de Villiers and du Plessis did not help the cause of the hosts. T20 captain Duminy stood out among the senior players playing some brilliant innings and taking his side to a series decider at Newlands.
India posted their lowest total of the series at Newlands on Saturday mainly due to the inspired bowling performance from young protean pacer Junior Dala. The youngster picked up three while Dhawan and Raina combined to take India to a decent total of 172. Duminy batted his way to another fifty, but Christiaan Jonker’s efforts with the bat were not quite enough to take hosts home. Bhuvneshwar Kumar stood out among the bowlers picking up two at an economy of six. India will take part in a T20 tri-series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Sri Lanka next month.
