NEW DELHI: France began their World Cup campaign with a nail biting 2-1 victory against Australia in their opening Group C match in Kazan on Saturday.
Midfielder Paul Pogba scored the game-winner with a beautiful volley in the 80th minute. It was Pogba’s 10th international goal and second in World Cup competition.
After a goalless first half, the game came to life with all three goals coming in the second half. French forward Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring in the 58th minute by converting a penalty.
Mile Jedinak scored the equalizer for Australia after France’s Samuel Umtiti was called for a handball in the box. It marked the first time since 2002 that two teams converted penalty kicks in the same World Cup match.
Technology played a part in the game as two goals came through a penalty awarded by Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The first goal under the VAR in a world cup came in the France-Australia game.
Peru take on Denmark in the other Group C match at the Mordovia Arena in Saransk later in the day.
